Over the past year I've been trying to learn more about the history of this land where we live: the plants and their communities, but especially the people who had been living here for thousands of years. I started by reading Dee Brown's "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee". In some way I needed to physically process the information I was taking in. So I embroidered these portraits from pictures in the book to spend time with these faces (Chief Joseph, Young-Man-Afraid-Of-His-Horses, Red Cloud, Santanta, and Lone Wolf).
